Abstract

The daily lives of the Ciptagelar Indigenous Community are deeply intertwined with their beliefs, culture, and agricultural traditions, leading the majority of them to work as farmers. However, between 2001 and 2022, their agricultural land drastically decreased by 92% due to much of it being converted into residential areas and homestays. This land conversion signifies deagrarianization, where the economy and livelihoods shift away from the agrarian sector. This deagrarianization will alter the traditional tenurial system of the Ciptagelar Indigenous Community, which has complex impacts on their food sovereignty. This paper aims to explain the existence of the traditional tenurial system of the Ciptagelar Indigenous Community amidst the threat of deagrarianization due to land conversion in their area. The study employs ethnographic methods to analyze cultural aspects comprehensively through indepth field research and an emic perspective (native point of view) to understand the local concepts and values regarding agricultural land and its changes. This paper will illustrate the traditional tenurial system patterns of the Ciptagelar Indigenous Community, the cultural values underpinning the system, land use patterns and their historical changes, the threat of deagrarianization to the traditional tenurial system, and the mitigation efforts that can be undertaken to preserve the traditional tenurial system. The research findings indicate that the Ciptagelar Indigenous Community does not experience direct deagrarianization due to land conversion. However, the threat of deagrarianization remains because of the transfer of land-use rights among residents, leading to land conversion.
