Abstract

The need for land increases along with economic development and urbanization, as well as the negative impacts of land conversion from agricultural to non-agricultural use in West Karawang District, Karawang Regency. This study aims to analyze the impact of land conversion from agricultural to non-agricultural use in West Karawang District during the period 2017 to 2024. Along with rapid population growth and the development of industrial areas, agricultural land that was previously productive is experiencing pressure from changes in function, which can threaten food security and the welfare of farmers. This research uses an approachmix method, which combines quantitative and qualitative methods. Quantitative analysis was conducted by interpreting Sentinel satellite imagery using Google Earth Engine to map land cover changes, as well as a simple correlation test to see the influence of farmer welfare, paddy field productivity, and population density on land use conversion. Qualitative analysis was conducted through in-depth interviews with landowners and related agencies to understand the socio-economic impacts that occurred. The results showed that the highest rate of land use conversion occurred in Tunggakjati Village at 19.5 ha/year. Simple correlations showed that all three factors (farmer welfare, land productivity, and population density) influenced land use conversion. The impacts of land use conversion include decreased agricultural productivity, reduced farmer income, shifting livelihoods, and increased economic pressure.
