Abstract

The palm oil factory, specifically PT. Medco Papua Hijau Selaras in Sidey District, Manokwari Regency, West Papua Province, plays a significant role in the local economy but also poses various negative impacts on the environment and the community. While the presence of this factory contributes to job creation and increased income, environmental issues such as water and soil pollution due to waste, as well as a decline in environmental quality, are serious problems faced by the local community. Additionally, the social impacts experienced by the local population include tensions arising from land conflicts and a decrease in quality of life. Therefore, it is essential to explore how the company can enhance community participation and involvement in decision-making processes to minimize the negative social and environmental impacts caused by the operations of the palm oil factory. This research is qualitative in nature with a descriptive approach, focusing on the collection and analysis of non-numerical data to gain an in-depth understanding of social, cultural, or psychological phenomena, emphasizing the uniqueness of the phenomena being studied. The research location is set in Kampung Sidey SP 9, Sidey District, Manokwari Regency, West Papua Province, considering the environmental damage caused by the presence of PT. Medco Papua Hijau Selaras. The subjects of the study include the Head of Sidey District, the Head of Sidey Health Center, the Head of Meyof I Village, and the community of Kampung Sidey, with informants providing information through interviews. The data collected is divided into primary data, obtained directly from sources through interviews, and secondary data, obtained from literature studies. Data collection is conducted through interviews and documentation. Data analysis is carried out through several stages, starting from information collection, data reduction and abstraction, preparation of the smallest units of information, grouping information, to the formulation of propositional statements aimed at answering research questions and providing logical arguments. The existence of the PT. Medco Papua Hijau Selaras Palm Oil Factory in SP 9 Sidey District, Manokwari Regency, West Papua Province, has a complex impact on the environment and the local community. Air, water, and soil pollution due to waste generated have damaged ecosystems and negatively affected public health. Although the factory creates jobs that increase community income, social tensions and jealousy among residents have also emerged, especially as the community feels marginalized in decision-making processes that affect their lives. The community's ability to adapt to these changes is influenced by economic conditions, access to information, and social support. Therefore, effective mitigation measures, such as efficient waste management and the implementation of environmentally friendly technologies, are crucial to ensure that factory operations are sustainable and responsible.
