Abstract

Local food security is under threat in Bantul Regency due to the conversion of paddy fields into developed land. This study aims to map paddy field land use changes from 2019 to 2024, assess the potential of each district to support rice production using a scoring method, and formulate land use direction recommendations. The method used is descriptive quantitative with spatial analysis. Primary data consisted of Sentinel-2 satellite imagery for 2019 and 2024, which then classified using supervised classification and tested for accuracy with a confusion matrix (overall accuracy of 85.37%). Six variables were scored without weighting consisted of: area of paddy field conversion, area of Sustainable Food Agricultural Land (LP2B), area of Protected Paddy Field (LSD), land capability, harvested area, and population density. Results showed that the largest land use change occurred from paddy field to built-up land, covering 3,606 hectares (36.51%). Scoring analysis produced five potential categories. Sub-districts with very high support for rice production were Sanden (22), Imogiri (23), Bambanglipuro (24), and Jetis (24). Conversely, Kasihan (14) fell into the most unsupportive category. The recommendations compiled based on the result of the study are sub-district with very high and high support (consisted of Bambanglipuro, Bantul, Imogiri, Kretek, Pandak, Pundong, Sanden, Sewon, Jetis) should be fully supported for rice production through intensification and a moratorium on land conversion. Meanwhile Sub-districts with moderate support (consisted of Banguntapan, Piyungan, Pleret, Sedayu, Srandakan) should be encouraged for rice production under strict supervision. Districts with low support (consisted of Kasihan, Dlingo, Pajangan) are considered suboptimal for rice production with controlled conversion allowed. Keywords: potential mapping; rice production; Bantul Regency; scoring method; land use change
