Abstract

Land acquisition for the development of the Mandalika Circuit in Central Lombok Regency forms part of the development of the Mandalika Special Economic Zone as a tourism-based economic growth center. However, land relinquishment by entitled parties does not only involve the provision of compensation. It also affects livelihood changes, asset ownership structures, and the socioeconomic conditions of households. This study aims to analyze the socioeconomic conditions of the entitled parties before land acquisition, the patterns of compensation use, the factors that influence this use, and its impact on socioeconomic conditions after land acquisition. The study uses a descriptive qualitative method. The researcher selected informants through purposive sampling based on five categories of compensation amounts. Data came from semi-structured interviews, observation, and documentation involving entitled parties in Kuta Village and Sukadana Village. The results show that before land acquisition, the entitled parties maintained good social relationships and stayed active in customary and community activities. Economically, the released land functioned as a residence, a source of livelihood, and the main household asset. The entitled parties used the compensation money in three main patterns: productive, consumptive, and saving. Productive use included land purchases, business capital, lodging businesses, livestock purchases, and education costs. Consumptive use included home construction, distribution to family, daily needs, vehicle purchases, debt repayment, the umrah pilgrimage, waqf, and circumcision ceremonies. Saving use remained limited and took the form of savings accounts and time deposits. Cultural, social, and personal factors influenced the use of compensation money. Age and life stage were the most dominant factors in shaping the pattern of use. The impacts varied. For some entitled parties, the use of compensation produced positive effects through higher income, the formation of new assets, and business development. For others, it produced negative effects, because some parties stopped working or earned less after land acquisition. This study concludes that the use of compensation money produced different socioeconomic impacts among the entitled parties. These differences depended on the patterns of use and on the ability of the entitled parties to manage the compensation money properly, wisely, and sustainably.
