Abstract
The sporadic urban growth in Yogyakarta has led to a logical consequence: the shrinking of green spaces due to intense competition for land use. The availability of Public Green Open Spaces in Yogyakarta currently falls far short of the targets set by regulations. Amid the scarcity of government-owned land, the utilization of Sultan Ground emerges as an alternative solution to address the shortfall in Public Green Open Space coverage, which currently stands at a mere 8.43% far below the target. This study aims to identify the potential of Sultan Ground as an alternative site for Public Green Open Spaces using a mixed-methods approach with a sequential explanatory design. Spatial data was integrated with results from indepth interviews with the Environmental Agency and the Land and Spatial Planning Agency. The study’s findings reveal that Sultan Ground’s current active contribution to RTHP remains low, at just 0.7%. Through a three-stage analysis including physical potential screening, policy alignment, and land cover assessment 10 priority Sultan Ground sites were identified that could increase the RTHP percentage by 8.623%. Local authorities must immediately secure these lands to prevent rapid building occupation resulting from urbanization. Keywords: Green Open Space, Sultan Ground, Yogyakarta
