Abstract

The rate of agricultural land conversion in Indonesia continues to escalate, including in West Java Province, which lost 13,536 hectares of rice fields between 2018 and 2023. This phenomenon also threatens Banjar City, a strategic southern cross-border gateway between West Java and Central Java provinces. This study aims to analyze the spatial distribution pattern of incompatible land conversion in Protected Rice Fields (LSD), evaluate agricultural land carrying and holding capacity, and determine its relationship with population growth rate in Banjar City. A quantitative descriptive spatial approach was employed using GIS overlay techniques based on Sentinel-2 satellite imagery from 2020 and 2025. Data analysis incorporated Nearest Neighbour Analysis (NNA) and the correlation test. The results revealed that rice field conversion within the LSD reached 8,28 hectares (averaging 1,656 ha/year) with a clustered distribution pattern (T = 0.72). In 2025, the land carrying capacity remained in a surplus condition (availability of 3,239.31 ha > requirement of 3,006.06 ha) and is projected to reach its threshold limit in 87,27 years. Furthermore, the population growth rate had a very weak and non-significant positive correlation with land conversion in the LSD (correlation coefficient = 0.048; p > 0.05).
