Abstract

Population growth is one of the factors that may influence land use change, particularly in areas experiencing rapid urban development. Gamping District, as a suburban area supporting Yogyakarta City, has experienced population growth that has contributed to the conversion of agricultural land into non-agricultural land. This study aims to analyze the population growth rate, identify agricultural-to-non-agricultural land use changes during the 2015–2025 period, and examine the effect of population growth on agricultural land use change in Gamping District, Sleman Regency. This study employed a quantitative approach using spatial and statistical analyses. The data consisted of the 2015 and 2025 Land Use Maps obtained from the Sleman Land Office, population data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS), and Esri World Imagery Wayback as supporting data. The land use data were standardized according to the Norms, Standards, Procedures, and Criteria (NSPK) and validated through 51 ground check points, resulting in an agreement level of 96.08%, before being reclassified into the Land Use Balance (NPGT) categories. The analyses included overlay analysis, population growth rate calculation, and simple linear regression. The results indicate that the average population growth rate in Gamping District during 2015–2025 was 0.01114 (approximately 1.11% per year). During the same period, 519.20 hectares of agricultural land were converted into non-agricultural land, primarily for residential and industrial uses. The simple linear regression analysis showed that population growth had no significant effect on agricultural land use change (Sig. = 0.061 > 0.05). These findings suggest that agricultural land conversion in Gamping District is also influenced by other factors, including urban development, spatial planning policies, infrastructure expansion, and land economic value.
