Abstract

The West Sleman region is a strategic area designated for agriculture and as a food security buffer for Sleman Regency. However, regional development, population growth, and rising demand for non-agricultural land have driven the conversion of paddy fields to non-paddy uses and reduced rice production. This study aims to analyze changes in paddy field land cover in West Sleman between 2015 and 2025 and their impact on rice production, employing a descriptive quantitative method using SPOT 7 (2015) and Ziyuan-3 (2025) imagery. The analysis involved image interpretation, digitization, accuracy assessment, overlay techniques, calculations of area and rates of change, Global and Local Moran's I spatial autocorrelation analysis, and the calculation of potential rice production loss. Accuracy assessment results yielded an overall accuracy of 91% and a Kappa coefficient of 0.82. The paddy field area decreased from 5,515 hectares (51% of the total area) in 2015 to 5,085 hectares (47%) in 2025—a reduction of 430 hectares (8% of the total area) at an average rate of 43 hectares (0.79%) per year. Overlaying the data with the Spatial Pattern of the Regional Spatial Plan (RTRW) revealed that 338 hectares (79%) of this conversion occurred within designated Food Agriculture Areas, indicating an inconsistency with the area's intended function. Global Moran's I analysis indicated a random pattern of change, whereas Local Moran's I showed significant concentrations in the Minggir District (Low-High Outlier) and Godean District (High-Low Outlier), while the Moyudan and Seyegan districts showed no significant clustering. Rice production fell from 93,040 tons GKG (2015) to 56,610 tons GKG (2025), with a total potential production loss of 165,748 tons GKG over the study period due to the reduction in paddy field area. Therefore, consistent control over land-use conversion and monitoring of land cover are essential. Keywords: Land Use Change, Paddy Fields, Spatial Analysis, Rice Production, West Sleman
