Abstract

Agricultural land conversion to non-agricultural uses has the potential to reduce productive paddy fields and affect food security, particularly in peri-urban areas. Majalaya, Purwasari, and Klari Districts in Karawang Regency, as part of Indonesia's national rice-producing area, are experiencing development pressures that encourage agricultural land conversion. This study aims to analyze the effect of agricultural land conversion and population density on food security in the study area. This research employed a survey method with a quantitative approach, combined with spatial analysis and multiple linear regression. Agricultural land conversion was identified using Sentinel-2 satellite imagery from 2017 and 2025 through overlay analysis, while food security was calculated using the Martanto (2019) method. The results showed that 3,559.04 hectares of agricultural land were converted to non-agricultural uses during the 2017–2025 period. Nevertheless, the study area remained in a food surplus condition, with a food production capacity capable of supporting 1,011,537 people, exceeding the total population of 394,147 people. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that agricultural land conversion and population density simultaneously had a significant effect on food security. Partially, agricultural land conversion had a positive and significant effect, while population density had a negative and significant effect on food security. The coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.287) indicates that 28.7% of the variation in food security is explained by these two variables.
