Abstract
The conversion of agricultural land into non-agricultural use is an important issue in regional development because it may affect the availability of agricultural land, food security, and the socio-economic conditions of local communities. Grabag Subdistrict, Purworejo Regency, is an area that still relies on agricultural activities, but at the same time faces land-use pressure due to settlement needs, economic activities, and regional development. This study aims to identify the rate of agricultural land conversion, its spatial distribution pattern, the relationship between population density and land conversion, and its socio-economic impacts on the community. This research used a mixed methods approach. The quantitative approach was applied through Sentinel image processing, image interpretation, supervised classification, accuracy assessment, overlay analysis, land conversion rate analysis, Average Nearest Neighbor analysis, and Pearson correlation analysis. The qualitative approach was conducted through interviews, document studies, and interpretation of information obtained from the community and related institutions. The results show that the conversion of agricultural land, particularly paddy fields, into non-agricultural use in Grabag Subdistrict during 2020–2024 occurred gradually and unevenly among villages. The total converted agricultural land reached 7.79 hectares, with an average conversion rate of 1.56 hectares per year. The spatial pattern of land conversion tended to be dispersed, with a Nearest Neighbor Ratio of 1.381626. The relationship between population density and land conversion showed a strong, significant, and negative correlation, with a correlation coefficient of -0.730 and a significance value of 0.040. The socio- economic impacts include changes in livelihoods, reduced farming opportunities, shifts in income sources, and increased land economic value. Although some communities gain short-term economic benefits, the decline of agricultural land may affect the sustainability of farming activities and community livelihood security in the long term. Keywords: land conversion, agricultural land, socio-economic impact, Grabag Subdistrict, land use
