Abstract
The phenomenon of agricultural land conversion to non-agricultural uses in Prafi District, Manokwari Regency, has been driven by population growth, urbanization, and rapid infrastructure development. This condition poses serious challenges, as the reduction of productive agricultural land threatens food security, decreases agricultural production, and alters the socio-economic characteristics of local communities. Therefore, examining the spatial distribution and patterns of agricultural land conversion is essential for understanding land-use dynamics in the region. This study aims to analyze the spatial distribution of agricultural land conversion to non-agricultural uses, identify the factors driving the conversion, and determine the challenges and potential solutions for maintaining the sustainability of agricultural land. The findings are expected to provide a basis for developing more effective and sustainable spatial planning policies. The research employed a mixed-methods approach with purposive sampling across all villages in Prafi District. Data were obtained from Sentinel-2 satellite imagery for 2017 and 2024, land-use map overlays, and interviews with local communities and stakeholders involved in land conversion. Spatial analysis was conducted using image interpretation, field observations, and the Nearest Neighbor Analysis (NNA) method to examine the distribution patterns of land-use change. The results indicate a significant increase in the conversion of agricultural land to residential areas, commercial areas, and public facilities, with a clustered spatial pattern, particularly in the northern and northeastern parts of the district. The main driving factors include population growth, economic demands, infrastructure development, and declining public interest in agriculture. These changes have serious implications for food security and environmental sustainability, highlighting the need for stricter land conversion control policies and comprehensive agricultural land protection strategies in Prafi District.
