Abstract
The Yogyakarta–Bawen Toll Road, one of Indonesia's National Strategic Projects, has affected communities both directly and indirectly. This study aims to analyze the perspectives of men and women on the impacts of land acquisition based on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. A mixed methods approach was employed by combining quantitative and qualitative methods. Quantitative data were collected through questionnaires distributed to 60 respondents (30 men and 30 women) and analyzed using the Mann–Whitney U test. Qualitative data were obtained through in-depth interviews with affected communities, village officials, hamlet heads, and source triangulation. The findings show no significant difference between male and female perceptions across the five dimensions of Maslow's hierarchy of needs. The impacts of land acquisition were mainly perceived as shared experiences, including dust, road damage, noise, health disturbances, changes in road access, and irrigation disruption. Qualitative findings confirmed that these impacts were experienced collectively regardless of gender. The study concludes that the impacts of land acquisition in Kalurahan Margokaton are perceived more as collective community experiences than gender-based differences. The mixed methods approach and Maslow's theory provide a comprehensive understanding of community perspectives on land acquisition. Keywords: gender perspective, land acquisition, Maslow's hierarchy of needs, mixed methods, Yogyakarta–Bawen Toll Road.
