Abstract

Urban sprawl is a phenomenon of urban expansion characterized by the increasing conversion of land into built-up areas in suburban regions. North Kuta District, as a buffer area for Denpasar City and one of the main tourism destinations in Badung Regency, has experienced rapid development driven by tourism activities, investment, and population growth. This development has the potential to affect tourism sustainability. Therefore, this study aims to identify the urban sprawl pattern in North Kuta District and analyze the impact of urban sprawl on tourism sustainability. This study employed a mixed-method approach with a sequential explanatory design, integrating quantitative and qualitative analyses. The quantitative analysis was conducted using Landsat satellite imagery from 2015 and 2025 through the Supervised Classification (Maximum Likelihood) method to identify land use changes. Furthermore, road buffer analysis was used to identify the ribbon development pattern, while land cover overlay analysis was applied to identify the leapfrog development pattern. The qualitative analysis was conducted through semi-structured interviews with relevant stakeholders and local communities and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive analysis model. The impacts on tourism sustainability were assessed based on the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) indicators, covering economic, socio-cultural, and environmental aspects. The results indicate that the built-up area increased from 1,271.61 ha in 2015 to 1,638.63 ha in 2025, while non-built-up land decreased from 2,114.39 ha to 1,747.37 ha. The urban sprawl pattern was predominantly characterized by ribbon development, represented by the expansion of built-up areas along major road corridors, and leapfrog development, indicated by the emergence of scattered built-up areas, particularly in Canggu Village, Tibubeneng Village, and Dalung Village. The impact analysis revealed that urban sprawl has generated positive economic effects by increasing employment opportunities. However, it has also produced negative socio-cultural impacts through reduced community comfort and security, as well as environmental impacts reflected in declining environmental cleanliness due to increasing volumes of solid waste and wastewater that have not been managed adequately. In conclusion, urban sprawl in North Kuta District has not fully supported tourism sustainability. Although it has generated economic benefits for local communities, the expansion of built-up areas without adequate environmental management and socio-cultural preservation may reduce the quality and attractiveness of the tourism destination. Therefore, stronger spatial planning control, improved environmental management, and the implementation of sustainable tourism principles are necessary to ensure the long-term sustainability of tourism in North Kuta District.
