Abstract

This study aims to analyze the post-relocation socio-economic changes of Teras Malioboro 2 street vendors, identify the spatial factors that most significantly influence their business performance, and determine the active adaptation strategies implemented by vendors after being permanently relocated to the Ketandan and Beskalan buildings in January 2025. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach. Primary data were gathered through observations and interviews with vendors and visitors, while secondary data were obtained from the Office of Cooperatives and SMEs of Yogyakarta City. The results indicate that the permanent relocation did not weaken the socio-solidarity among vendors; rather, interaction increased during low-occupancy periods. Economically, vendors experienced a decline and high instability in daily turnover during the initial phase because the new locations had different foot traffic patterns, although sales spiked during weekends and peak holiday seasons. Spatially, stall visibility and accessibility were the main obstacles; the modern facade of the Ketandan building created a psychological barrier for traditional market visitors, while the Beskalan building suffered from low visibility due to its positioning behind Teras Malioboro 1. To survive, vendors implemented double-adaptation strategies: utilizing digital technology (QRIS, TikTok content, and WhatsApp promotions) and performing active physical interaction by approaching visitors around the pedestrian ways to guide them to the stalls.
