Abstract

The conversion of agricultural land into non-agricultural use is an increasingly common phenomenon in peri-urban areas, including Kapanewon Gamping, Mlati, and Depok in Sleman Regency, driven by population growth, urbanization, and rising infrastructure demands. This study aims to analyze the influence of population density and accessibility on land use change in these three sub-districts during the 2019–2024 period, and to identify the impacts and solutions arising from such change. A mixed- methods approach was employed, combining spatial analysis through the overlay of 2019 and 2024 satellite imagery to map land use change, correlation and multiple linear regression tests processed using SPSS, and in-depth interviews with affected residents and village officials as qualitative data. The results indicate that accessibility has a strong and significant relationship with land use change, while population density also shows a significant effect within the regression model despite a relatively weak correlation. The conversion of agricultural to non-agricultural land has resulted in shifting livelihoods, reduced agricultural land area, and increased accessibility and mobility burdens for the community. This study recommends strengthening spatial planning policies, controlling the conversion of productive agricultural land, and improving sustainable accessibility so that regional development does not compromise environmental sustainability.
