Abstract
Land acquisition for the construction of the Yogyakarta–Bawen Toll Road has changed the availability of agricultural land that serves as a source of employment for sharecroppers in Pakunden Village. This study aims to analyze the changes in the social and economic conditions experienced by sharecroppers and the adaptation strategies they employ to maintain their household livelihoods following land acquisition. This study employed a qualitative method with a descriptive- analytical approach. Informants were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation and were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, consisting of data reduction, data display, conclusion drawing, and verification. The results show that land acquisition did not completely eliminate employment opportunities for sharecroppers. Their working relationships with landowners or land managers continued due to the availability of remaining land and the purchase of new agricultural land. Nevertheless, the transition period was marked by a reduction in the cultivated land area, while access to newly available land was not restored evenly. The sharecroppers’ income had also not fully recovered due to declining agricultural production caused by rat infestations and unpredictable weather, which prolonged the cultivation period and resulted in crop failure on some plots. In response to these conditions, the sharecroppers adopted active strategies by maintaining agricultural work, utilizing family labor, and taking additional jobs; passive strategies by prioritizing basic needs and reducing expenditures; and network strategies by relying on support from landowners, family members, neighbors, farmer groups, and government programs. These strategies helped sustain household livelihoods but were not sufficient to eliminate the sharecroppers’ vulnerability because their employment and income remained dependent on land owned by others and on agricultural production. Keywords: land acquisition, sharecroppers, adaptation strategies, livelihoods.
