Abstract
Teleng Beach in Pacitan Regency is a coastal area that directly faces the Indian Ocean and experiences coastal abrasion, threatening the shoreline, ecosystems, and the livelihoods of coastal communities. Coastal Green Open Space (GOS) plays an important role in reducing wave energy, retaining sediments, and stabilizing the soil. However, quantitative studies examining the relationship between GOS conditions and coastal abrasion rates in this area remain limited. This study aims to analyze changes in GOS conditions at Teleng Beach during the 2016–2025 period using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) derived from Sentinel-2A satellite imagery, analyze coastal abrasion rates during the same period using the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) with the End Point Rate (EPR) method, and examine the relationship between GOS conditions and coastal abrasion rates using Spearman's Rank Correlation. This study employed a quantitative descriptive-analytical approach with the assistance of ArcGIS and SPSS. The results indicate that GOS conditions at Teleng Beach experienced significant degradation during the 2016–2025 period. This was reflected in the decline of moderate to very dense vegetation cover from 58.95% to 42.89% of the total study area (270.13 ha), with the greatest reduction occurring in the very dense vegetation class, which decreased by 13.16 ha (38.50%). All coastal segments at Teleng Beach experienced abrasion at varying levels, with an average abrasion rate of -1.27 m/year and an average shoreline retreat of 11.4 meters landward. Approximately 20.00% of the shoreline segments were classified as having low abrasion, 60.00% as moderate abrasion, and 20.00% as high abrasion. The analysis revealed a significant and very strong relationship between GOS vegetation density and coastal abrasion at Teleng Beach. Spearman's correlation coefficient (ρ) of -0.842 (p < 0.05) indicates a very strong negative relationship, meaning that higher vegetation density is associated with lower coastal abrasion rates. Furthermore, the coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.709 indicates that 70.9% of the variation in coastal abrasion rates can be explained by GOS conditions, while the remaining 29.1% is influenced by other factors. Keywords: Green Open Space (GOS), coastal abrasion, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS).
