Abstract

This study examines changes in the use of customary land in the Ubud Customary Village, Bali, and the impact of changes in the use of customary land on the environment, culture, and local economy. The customary land in the Ubud Traditional Village was originally used for housing and agriculture, especially in rice cultivation and dry farming activities as well as various traditional ceremonies and socio-cultural activities. With the development of tourism, customary lands have undergone a significant transformation into tourist locations, lodgings, and other commercial buildings. This research uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach, collecting data through field observations, in-depth interviews with indigenous leaders and local communities, and documentation studies. The results of the study show that the change in the function of customary land in the Ubud Customary Village, which covers ±46,318 m² or about 15% of the total area of customary land, provides economic benefits with an increase in revenue from the tourism sector which reached 54.6 billion in 2019. However, the negative impact on the local environment and culture is also significant. Environmental impacts include increased air pollution due to the reduction of green land and the increasing use of transportation and infrastructure development. The cultural impact can be seen from the fading of customary values and traditions in land management and the decrease in community participation in religious activities. In conclusion, the conversion of customary land in Ubud Traditional Village brings important multidimensional changes, so that a balanced policy is needed between economic development and cultural and environmental preservation. The proposed recommendations include increasing regulations on customary land protection, strengthening community capacity in sustainable land management, and promoting culture-based tourism that respects local wisdom.
