Abstract
Banyuraden Village, Gamping Subdistrict, Sleman Regency is an area experiencing rapid development due to its strategic location as a buffer zone for the city of Yogyakarta. This development has led to changes in land use, particularly the conversion of rice fields into non-agricultural land. Land conversion is influenced by various factors, such as economic growth, urbanization, population growth, changes in people’s lifestyles, and environmental factors that affect agricultural land productivity. This situation warrants attention because it could impact the sustainability of agricultural land and food security in the Banyuraden area. This study aims to analyze the factors driving the conversion of rice paddies into non-agricultural land, as well as the resulting social and economic impacts on the community in Banyuraden Village. The study employs a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data collection was conducted through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. Research informants were selected using purposive sampling and included village officials, village administrators, community leaders, and farmers directly affected by the land conversion. Research findings indicate that economic factors are the primary drivers of land-use conversion, particularly rising land values and the demand for land for residential and commercial activities. Social factors, such as population growth and increasing demand for residential facilities, also contribute to changes in land use. In addition, environmental factors—such as changes in land productivity and climatic conditions—also influence landowners’ decisions to convert rice fields to non-agricultural land. Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that the conversion of rice fields in Banyuraden Village is the result of the interaction of economic, social, and environmental factors that have grown increasingly strong alongside the area’s development. Therefore, sustainable spatial planning, control over the conversion of agricultural land, and increased public awareness are needed to preserve productive agricultural land in order to support a balance between development and food security in the future.
