Abstract

Urbanization in Java has reached a crucial stage, where the concentration of population activity is not only in the city center, but also spreading to the suburban areas. Klaten Regency, as part of the buffer zone of Greater Surakarta region (Subosukawonosraten), is one of the most vulnerable to experience rapid demographic pressure. This is due to its strategic geographical location between two metropolitan areas, namely the Greater Solo Metropolitan Area and Yogyakarta. The rapid rate of population growth is in line with the increasing demand for built-up land, as limited land in urban areas has triggered the phenomenon of urban sprawl in the northern region of Klaten Regency, particularly in the Districts of Ceper, Delanggu, and Polanharjo. This dynamic causes inefficient land use due to the massive conversion of productive land into built-up land. This condition will threaten the existence of the agricultural sector and disrupt the stability of the community's economic structure. This study aims to examine the phenomenon of urban sprawl identified through the conversion of agricultural land into built-up land, the factors causing urban sprawl with the variables of population size, distance to arterial roads, and agricultural land area, as well as the impacts on the economic and agricultural sectors. This study employs a quantitative descriptive method with a spatial approach, using land use overlay on Sentinel-2 Level 2A imagery from 2017 and 2025, and Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) analysis. The analysis reveals dynamic land use changes reflecting urban sprawl in the northern outskirts of Klaten Regency, characterized by a massive increase in built-up area of 375,02 hectares through land use change mechanisms. This condition is caused by population growth, high accessibility, and the availability of agricultural land, which varying impacts at each location. Urban sprawl has also forcibly shifted the economic structure from a primary sector base toward the secondary and tertiary sectors. The decline in the primary sector is also directly proportional to the shrinking agricultural land area and declining agricultural productivity in the study area. Therefore, optimizing the comparative advantages of each sub-district is necessary to create village economic independence. Stringent regional development policies are required to preserve the agricultural sector while maintaining overall economic stability. Keywords: Urban Sprawl, Land Use Change, Factors, Impact
