Abstract

Sayung District, Demak Regency, is a coastal area that frequently experiences tidal flooding due to tidal inundation and various coastal environmental factors. This study aims to analyze vegetation density changes during the 2016–2025 period and to examine the relationship between vegetation density and the frequency of tidal flood occurrences. A quantitative approach was employed using Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) imagery processed through Google Earth Engine (GEE). Vegetation density was assessed using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), while tidal flood data were obtained from the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Demak Regency. The results indicate that vegetation density changed throughout the study period while maintaining a relatively consistent spatial pattern. Coastal villages in the northern part of Sayung District were predominantly characterized by nonvegetated and very low vegetation classes, whereas the southern area remained dominated by high vegetation density. Spearman correlation analysis produced a correlation coefficient of -0.730 with a significance value of 0.000, while the visual analysis using a scatter plot yielded a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.6792. These findings indicate a significant negative relationship between vegetation density and the frequency of tidal flood occurrences. The study concludes that villages with higher vegetation density generally experienced lower frequencies of tidal flooding. However, tidal flooding is influenced not only by vegetation density but also by other environmental factors, including elevation, distance from the coastline, land subsidence, tidal dynamics, and drainage conditions. Therefore, vegetation conservation should be integrated with broader coastal management strategies to support tidal flood mitigation in Sayung District.
