Abstract

The development of the Klaten Urban Area has driven land-use change and increased pressure on the implementation of the spatial pattern plan. This study aims to analyze land-use changes during 2017–2025, evaluate the conformity of existing land use in 2025 with the Klaten Regency Spatial Plan for 2021–2041, and identify indications of urban sprawl in the Klaten Urban Area. A quantitative descriptive method with a spatial approach based on a Geographic Information System was employed. Data were obtained through the interpretation of Sentinel-2 imagery from 2017 and 2025 and analyzed using overlay and Average Nearest Neighbor techniques. The results show that the area of paddy fields decreased from 3,842.78 ha to 3,423.85 ha, while built-up land increased from 3,049.26 ha to 3,269.50 ha. Total land-use change reached 497.34 ha, with the largest conversion involving 186.56 ha of paddy fields transformed into built-up land. Land-use conformity consisted of 73.70% conforming, 23.77% supporting, and 2.52% non- conforming categories. The spatial pattern realization rate was 73.70%, indicating that the plan had not yet been fully realized. A Nearest Neighbor Ratio of 0.72 indicates a clustered pattern of built-up land. The findings reveal indications of concentrated urban expansion toward peripheral areas, accompanied by pressure on food-crop zones and non-conformity with the spatial pattern plan.
