Abstract
The conversion of agricultural land into gold mining areas is a phenomenon that not only changes land use but also affects the economic structure, livelihood patterns, and livelihood strategies of rural communities. This study aims to analyze the process of agricultural land conversion into gold mining areas, examine the economic transformation of local communities, identify changes in livelihood patterns, and describe community livelihood strategies in Kayuboko Village, Parigi Moutong Regency. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach using the Sustainable Livelihood Framework (SLF) as the main analytical framework. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and document analysis involving purposively selected informants. Data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, while triangulation techniques were applied to ensure data validity. The findings indicate that the expansion of gold mining activities has accelerated the conversion of agricultural land into mining areas, reducing productive farmland and transforming the community's occupational structure. Many residents shifted from agriculture to mining and supporting economic activities, including trading, transportation services, mining supply businesses, and other informal occupations. Although this transformation increased household income for some community members in the short term, it also created greater economic vulnerability due to dependence on the mining sector, which is highly influenced by fluctuations in gold production and commodity prices. Based on the Sustainable Livelihood Framework, the community adopted various livelihood strategies, including livelihood diversification, strengthening social capital, improving human capital through skills development, and optimizing financial and physical assets to maintain household economic resilience. The study concludes that the community's economic transformation represents an adaptive response to land-use change, generating new economic opportunities while simultaneously creating challenges for sustainable livelihoods. Therefore, policies promoting sustainable land-use management and community economic empowerment are essential to ensure long-term rural welfare. Keywords: land-use conversion, economic transformation, gold mining, Sustainable Livelihood Framework, livelihood strategies.
