Abstract
Urban expansion around Yogyakarta City has increased demand for non- agricultural land and accelerated the conversion of paddy fields in Gamping and Mlati Subdistricts. This study aims to analyze the spatial distribution of agricultural land conversion to non-agricultural uses during 2017–2024, predict food security, identify the impacts of land conversion, and formulate constraints and solutions. A mixed- methods approach combining quantitative-spatial and qualitative-descriptive analyses was applied. Data were obtained from Sentinel-2 imagery for 2017 and 2024, population and agricultural statistics, and interviews. The analysis employed Google Earth Engine, supervised classification, a confusion matrix, overlay analysis, Average Nearest Neighbor, food-security limit calculations, and descriptive interpretation. The results show that built-up land increased by 401.06 ha, while paddy fields decreased by 241.49 ha and other vegetation declined by 159.55 ha. Classification accuracy reached 83.10% in 2017 and 92.95% in 2024. Land conversion formed a clustered pattern, indicated by a z-score below -2.58 and p below 0.01, particularly in highly accessible areas near activity centers. Current food needs remain adequately supplied; however, if the trend continues, the combined area is projected to reach a food-security balance point approximately 21.79 years after 2024, when the remaining paddy-field area reaches 1,271.30 ha. Land conversion reduces local production capacity, increases dependence on external supplies, and shifts farmers’ livelihoods. Protecting sustainable agricultural land, enforcing spatial plans, strengthening interagency coordination, assisting farmers, and optimizing productive land and home gardens are therefore essential to maintain long-term food security. Keywords : agricultural land, food security, land conversion, land-use change, spatial analysis
